Wan urges quick, thorough investigation in bar raid

Businessman and civic leader Alex Wan, who is seeking the Atlanta City Council District 6 seat, urges a quick, thorough police investigation following controversial gay bar raid.

Atlanta, September 12, 2009 – Alex Wan, a businessman and civic leader who is seeking the Atlanta City Council District 6 seat, has called for a quick, thorough investigation by police after a recent raid on the Eagle, an Atlanta gay bar.

“I have been following this news closely since I first learned about it early Friday morning, and I am deeply concerned with the situation,” he says.  “I have spoken with Councilperson Anne Fauver and asked for all of the facts surrounding the incident.  She told me that she has contacted Major Williams, who is investigating the matter, and will let me know what further information she learns.”

Wan continues, “as a citizen and, in particular, as a proud member of the Atlanta LGBT community, I know the importance of having safe places where we can gather to socialize - including bars and clubs - without the fear of being threatened or targeted by law enforcement, provided no illegal activities are occurring in those venues.”

“I urge that the investigation be conducted quickly and thoroughly, and I will do everything in my power to see that the appropriate actions are taken based on the findings,” he says.

The District 6 – in which the bar in question is located – seat is currently held by Fauver, a two-term council member who in late April announced her decision not to seek re-election.  Wan entered the race in May; he was raised in Atlanta and has been a homeowner in the city’s Morningside neighborhood for 15 years.

City Council District 6 encompasses much of intown Atlanta, including the Morningside/Lenox Park, Virginia-Highland, Midtown, Ansley Park, Piedmont Heights, Druid Hills, Candler Park and Lindridge-Martin Manor neighborhoods.
